WECDSB closing schools on Friday

The Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board has decided to close all schools for in-person learning on Friday.

Although schools will be closed, all non-CUPE staff are expected to report to work. Teachers will post schoolwork to Google Classroom so students can work from home on Friday.

The board made the decision because of the planned protest by the Canadian Union of Public Employees on Friday.  The union is planning an Ontario-wide protest against the government's decision to use the notwithstanding clause in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to impose a contract for the education workers.

The union represents 400 employees with the board, including educational assistants, early childhood educators, and other child and youth workers.

Childcare centres that operate out of the schools will remain open unless otherwise notified by the operators.

The board says it could reverse its decision if the situation between CUPE and the government changes before Friday.
