Efforts to support businesses during pandemic wins TWEPI honours

Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island picked up three awards for helping local businesses stay afloat during the pandemic.

The Tourism Industry Association of Ontario presented its Ontario Tourism Resiliency Awards in Huntsville on Wednesday night.

TWEPI picked up two awards in the collaboration category for its #DineYQG and #ShopYQG initiatives encouraging residents and visitors to consider local businesses during shutdowns because of COVID-19.

The two brands still promote businesses, and in 2021, the websites got over 38,000 page views.

The agency picked up another award for its Get Hooked Fishing Tournament in the innovation category. It was a partnership with Anglers Atlas and Devonshire Mall. The virtual fishing tournament in April 2021 encouraged participants to explore the region while remaining socially distant. More than 120,000 people caught 3,600 fish during the ten-day event.

"These awards clearly recognize Tourism Windsor Essex's adaptability during the COVID-19 pandemic," said CEO Gordon Orr. "We are proud of our ongoing efforts to bolster the image and economy of the region by developing, marketing, and promoting our destination in cooperation within a united tourism industry."

Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island was nominated for three other awards, including in the sustainability category for its W.E. Heart Local campaign.
