Ministry of Health to meet with local officials

The MPP for Windsor-Tecumseh says he is committed to working with the Essex County EMS to fix off-load ambulance delays.

Andrew Dowie indicated the provincial government has already implemented a four-part strategy that includes providing better care in the community and implementing programs in the hospital to improve patient flow.

"There's been $23-million invested in the dedicated off-load nursing program, and that allows paramedics to get back into the community faster. We're also expanding the 911 models of care, so that paramedics are empowered to provide care right in the community," said Dowie.

Dowie confirmed Health Minister Sylvia Jones will be meeting with Warden Gary McNamara and EMS Chief Bruce Krauter as soon as possible.

On Monday, the County of Essex declared a local emergency due to offloading delays, where there is no ambulance available to respond to an emergency because they are waiting to offload patients at the hospital.

MPP Lisa Gretzky is calling on the government to repeal Bill 124, which limits salary increases for public sector employees.  She believes that would attract more people to the health care system. She would also like to see the government direct surplus funds to the healthcare sector.

"The Ford government needs to direct money from its $2.1-billion surplus into the health care sector to ensure everyone always has access to primary care from a physician, as well as critical care when an emergency strikes,” said Gretzky.

Chief Krauter told the media on Monday the emergency declaration will stay in place until offload delays are properly addressed.
