The Ontario Provincial Police hope drivers will heed their warnings and drive carefully as they travel to see family and friends this Thanksgiving Day Weekend.
Road fatalities on OPP-patrolled roads are already up 24 per cent from this time last year, and police blame drivers who made bad decisions and failed to take their responsibility seriously.
Headed into October, there were 268 fatalities. Of those, 69 crashes were speed-related, 57 were the result of inattentive driving, 40 were caused by impaired driving, and another 40 were because drivers or passengers didn't wear a seatbelt.
"The OPP and its policing partners are committed to doing everything within their means to keep the motoring public safe during one of the busiest traffic weekends of the year," said the OPP in a release. "If every road user makes the same commitment every day of the year, Canadians could unequivocally reduce the tragic loss of lives."
The OPP will join policing services across the country for Operation Impact this weekend. The annual campaign is the most robust police enforcement initiative aimed at four potentially deadly behaviours, speeding, aggressive and distracted driving, driving impaired, and seatbelt use.
