Caldwell First Nation, Windsor-Essex mark Orange Shirt Day

The Caldwell First Nation is marking Orange Shirt Day with a walk throughout Leamington and a sacred fire at Point Pelee National Park.

Anyone looking to show their support and learn about the history of residential schools in Canada is welcome to attend.

"We're still in a learning and an understanding process and it's nice when others join and show their support and ask, what is it that they can do to help," said Carrie Ann Peters, culture and language coordinator with Caldwell First Nation.

This is the second National Truth and Reconciliation Day in Canada. The day was declared by the federal government in 2021 to recognize "the tragic legacy of residential schools, the missing children, the families left behind, and the survivors of these institutions."

While the holiday is new, the journey of reconciliation is not.

"It's not a new journey for us but it's good that it's finally a journey that others are wanting to share and understand," said Peters.

The walk in Leamington starts at the Band office on Orange Street at 9:30 a.m. The BBQ and sacred fire at Point Pelee National Park runs from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m.

The Town of Tecumseh is also hosting a walk in support of National Truth and Reconciliation Day. It also starts at 10 a.m. at Lakewood Park South.

The City of Windsor is hosting a community gathering at the Ojibway Prairie Complex from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Theresa Sims, a traditional Indigenous Knowledge Keeper and Elder, will be sharing culture and tradition through songs, drumming and stories.

The Chimczuk Museum and François Baby House are also free to attend on Friday in honour of National Truth and Reconciliation Day.

"We honour those survivors every day, we listen to their stories every day, we remember those little ones that didn't get to come home and that's not just one September 30," said Peters.
