OPP investigating weekend drowning in Essex

Ontario Provincial Police say they are looking into the drowning death of a man over the weekend.

The incident took place around 8 p.m. Saturday along the Lake Erie shoreline in Essex. The OPP took a missing person's report from someone who could not locate a 56-year-old man who had been on the beach in Colchester.

Police arrived and were directed to a location on the beach at the foot of McCarthy Road, where the man was found in the water, according to Constable Steven Duguay.

Officers immediately began life-saving measures and continued until Essex-Windsor EMS arrived. The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

The investigation continues with the cooperation of the Office of the Chief Coroner, but at the moment, police do not think the drowning is suspicious.

The victim's name has not been released.
