Essex begins process of licencing short-term rentals

The Town of Essex has allowed for the process of short-term rental owners to get licenced for operation.

On September 1, the Town put into effect a set of zoning regulations and licensing guidelines for short-term rental units (STRU). The purpose of the regulations is to ensure STRU owners are complying with the Town's bylaws and maintaining the character of the neighbourhoods they are located in. STRUs are also instrumental in supporting tourism.

"This is an important step towards regulating the short-term rental units in the Town of Essex," said Mayor Richard Meloche in a media release. "We thank all STRU owners for their cooperation in completing the application process."

Owners must make sure that their STRU is located in a district, and within a building, that is allowed under the Town's zoning bylaws. Only STRUs located in a residential area and operating on or before May 9, 2022, are eligible for a licence. New and existing establishments may operate with a licence in commercial, agricultural, and select green districts.

Complete information about the licencing process and regulations can be found on the STRU page at the Town's official website.
