CAA survey suggests driving parents don't always follow rules they support around schools

When you drop your kids off at school, the CAA wants you to think about how you drive and where you park.

A recent school zone safety survey suggested a lot of drivers in Ontario don't, even though they might support measures intended to keep students safe around schools.

The automobile association surveyed parents recently and found that two-thirds support automated speed enforcement in school zones. Almost eight out of ten think it does help lower speeds.

However, 78 per cent reported seeing drivers drive unsafely near schools, and only 37 per cent think the roads around their child's school are safe.

Some of the most common unsafe driving practices they reported were speeding, double parking, and stopping in undesignated areas.

To help reduce traffic, CAA encourages parents to let their kids walk to school if they live nearby, and if they don't, park at least a block away and have them go on foot the rest of the way. It also recommends giving yourself lots of time to drop the kids off.

It urges parents to follow their school's rules and avoid double parking or stopping on crosswalks. Dropping off or picking up the kids on the opposite side of the street from a school increases the risk of an accident, as does stopping in moving traffic.
