Holt commits to Windsor arena redevelopment

Windsor mayoral hopeful Chris Holt is promising to develop a plan with the community to redevelop the Windsor Arena.

The Barn, former home of the Windsor Spitfires, has sat empty for years. There have been many plans presented to redevelop the property but none have come to fruition

Holt says the property could become an anchor for the neighbourhood and the city as a whole.

"The vision would see the barn become a flexible community hub. It would be the proud home of the Windsor Express professional basketball team but it would also be able to adapt and morph into a wide-ranging community space," said Holt.

Holt would also like to honour the significant history of the Black community in Windsor.

"The McDougall Street corridor was once the epi-centre of the Black community in Windsor and home to the highest concentration of Black-owned businesses in the city," said Holt.

To honour that history he'd like to work with the Black community to re-establish ties to the neighbourhood by creating a Black cultural and historical district.

Holt indicated working with the community on the arena's redevelopment would be one of his top priorities if elected as mayor.

Ernie Lamont has refiled to run for the position of mayor. He withdrew papers earlier and filed for the Ward 3 councillor position but has now switched back to the mayor's ballot.

Benjamin Danyluk is also running for mayor.

The last day to file nomination papers is August 19, 2022.

Election Day is October 24.
