Work is now underway to repair 4,700 community housing units in Windsor-Essex.
Last year, the City of Windsor approved a plan to spend $170 million to improve the safety, accessibility, and energy efficiency of the stock of affordable housing in the community.
Now, the federal government announced it will be contributing $90 million through the National Housing Co-Investment Fund to support the project.
"All Canadians deserve a safe and affordable place to call home where they and their families can thrive and grow. This historic investment – the largest single housing investment in our community's history - will repair thousands of affordable housing units across Windsor-Essex, and help make sure our residents have a place to call home," said Windsor-Tecumseh MP Irek Kusmierczyk
The remaining funds come from the City of Windsor and the Windsor Essex Community Housing Corporation.
The Windsor Essex Community Housing Corporation has developed a plan to complete the projects. Interim CEO Michelle Coulis says improvements will be made to the overall buildings as well as the individual units.
"Things that will improve their enjoyment of the unit are things that are usually put off, things like kitchens, bathrooms, all those upgrades, there's dollars there for that," said Coulis.
It will take around seven years to complete the renovations on all of the units.
