Unifor issues strike notice for VIA Rail

The possibility of a strike at VIA Rail appears much more likely after Unifor announced a 72-hour strike notice.

The union, which represents 2,000 maintenance workers, chefs, on-board service personnel, customer service staff, and sales agents, said talks are not progressing.

Days ago, it revealed the results of a recent strike vote. Local 100 voted 99.3 per cent in favour while members of Council 4000 voted 99.4 per cent.

Job security is the biggest issue standing between the two sides.

"VIA Rail workers are frustrated that the employer continues to push concessions and not work towards a fair and equitable collective agreement," said Scott Doherty, Executive Assistant to Unifor's National President and lead negotiator. "We will do whatever it takes to get members the collective agreement they deserve."

The strike deadline is 12:01 a.m. on Monday.

VIA Rail has not said how a strike will impact service.
