ENWIN warns residents of door-to-door scam

ENWIN Utilities is warning Windsorites of the potential of falling victim to a scam.

The utility operation has reported several residents contacting them to say they had gotten phone calls or visits from people claiming to be from ENWIN. The caller or visitor notified the resident that their hydro or water service is in danger of being disconnected, and told the consumer to take care of fees via a list of kiosks in the Windsor-Essex region or by direct cash.

ENWIN said that if you are approached in this matter, hang up the phone, close the door, and contact Windsor police at the non-emergency line, 519-258-6111.

To protect yourself, ENWIN suggests that if anyone comes to your home or business claiming to be with the utility, ask for identification. If in doubt, call the ENWIN call centre at (519) 255-2727 to verify. ENWIN employees are happy to produce ID if asked and will never demand cash payment on the spot.

Do not call any number provided to you in an email or voicemail. Call the ENWIN call centre, as the utility does not have a toll-free number.

ENWIN also recommends never paying any charge that is not already shown on your bill, and never sharing any personal information with somebody that you don't know and trust.
