One record high fell in southwestern Ontario Tuesday, and others came close.
The first official day of summer felt like it in Windsor-Essex, as the record temperature high for June 21 fell. As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, the high recorded at Windsor Airport was 34.7 C, or 94.5 F, according to Environment Canada's hourly reading.
The record for the day was set in 2012 when the high in Windsor reached 34.4 C or 93.9 F. The highest humidex reading reached at the airport was 42 C or 107.6 F.
Tuesday's record high in Windsor was part of a three-day heat event when the weather agency issued a heat warning and an air quality statement due to the potential increased pollution caused by the heat and humidity.
It was originally thought records would fall across the region, but it did come close in Chatham-Kent and London. Environment Canada reported a high of 32 C, short of the record of 32.2 C on the day in 2020. London also fell short of breaking a record, reaching a high of 32.1 C, stopping just short of tying the record of 32.2 C that was set in 1941.
There is some relief in the forecast coming Thursday. Environment Canada meteorologist Steven Flisfeder told WindsorNewsToday.ca on Tuesday morning that the humidity should break starting Wednesday night, with more comfortable evening lows.
"A couple of degrees above normal for this time of year, into the high 20s, but we should see a bit of a reprieve from that humidity so it won’t be feeling as sticky," said Flisfeder.
