Essex offering flood protection subsidies

Residents in the Town of Essex can now look at options to protect their homes from flooding.

Over the past few years, there has been an increasing number of severe weather events that have resulted in flooding in Windsor-Essex. So the Town has now implemented a series of flood protection subsidies, designed to help residents protect their properties from flooding.

"As a municipality, we are committed to preparing for the effects of climate change," said Mayor Richard Meloche in a media release. "We are pleased to offer financial support through the Subsidy Program to assist residents in reducing the risk of flooding on their property."

Owners of single-family and duplex homes can apply for subsidies that would help pay for improvements such as disconnecting downspouts, completing investigative camera work, installing a sump pump, and-or installing a backwater valve.

Starting this year, homeowners can also get a subsidy for the purchase of a rain barrel, up to $50.

The subsidy program is open to residents and property owners within the Town of Essex, and who do not owe money in the form of overdue payments or back taxes.
