Spits' Johnston gets OHL's highest honour

The honours are still pouring in for the Windsor Spitfires and one of its key players.

Forward Wyatt Johnston has been named the Ontario Hockey League's (OHL) Most Outstanding Player, following a vote by OHL hockey writers and broadcasters. The Red Tilson Trophy was presented to Johnston by OHL Commissioner David Branch Tuesday morning at the WFCU Centre.

"It is an amazing honour to be receiving the Red Tilson Trophy," said Johnston. "There are countless people who have had massive contributions to helping me in this accomplishment. It is a huge privilege based on all the great players in this league. It is definitely a pretty cool feeling."

Johnston, who turned 19 last month, hails from Toronto and is a prospect of the NHL's Dallas Stars. He completed the regular season with 46 goals for 124 points.  Twelve of those goals were on the power play, and he holds a plus-29 rating. Johnston currently leads all playoff skaters with 13 goals and 37 points.

"Speaking for the organization, we are so proud of him," said Spitfires General Manager Bill Bowler. "He deserves this award and he will continue to get better and that is great for both the Spitfires and the Dallas Stars."

Johnston is the fourth player in Windsor Spitfires history to win the Red Tilson Trophy, after Hockey Hall-of-Famer Glenn Hall in 1951, Ernie Godden in 1981, and Ryan Ellis on 2011.

The Spitfires will resume their OHL Finals series against the Hamilton Bulldogs this Friday night at the WFCU Centre. The Spitfires lead the best-of-seven series 2-1 following a 6-3 win Monday night.
