Health unit closes Mettawas Beach in Kingsville

With the sunshine predicted by Environment Canada this weekend, you might be tempted to go to the beach.

That's okay if you're going to eight of the region's beaches, but the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has closed Mettawas Beach.

Testing this past Monday showed an e.coli count of 1000 MPN/100mL. That's a big spike from last week when it was 50 MPN/100mL.

Bacteria in beach water can cause illness, and the most common symptoms are vomiting and diarrhea, although lung, eye, ear, nose, and throat infections are not unusual.

The remaining beaches in Windsor-Essex are open.

The health unit tests water quality at nine local beaches every Monday or Tuesday after a long weekend.
