A non-profit organization that helps women and children fleeing domestic violence will expand, thanks to the support of local philanthropists.
Hiatus House, an agency that provides shelter and crisis support for women and children dealing with violence, has named Barry and Stephanie Zekelman as its platinum sponsor. The Zekelmans will have naming rights for the organization's proposed expansion, which will consist of a new building for transitional housing.
If a grant proposal from the federal government comes through, 40 transitional housing units will be built in a new structure on Louis Avenue in Windsor, across from the current Hiatus House.
"We are grateful to have such an incredible organization supporting women and children in our community with their many programs, such as a 24-hour helpline and emergency shelter," said the Zekelmans in a media release. "Their vision is to end violence against women and their children and to help them live violence-free. It is our privilege to be a part of providing a safe haven. We know that this centre of Safety and Change will empower women and allow them a fresh start."
Hiatus House's primary responsibility is to provide 24-hour-a-day access to crisis counselling and shelter for women and children leaving an abusive partner. The expansion will provide a chance for clients to receive shelter while accessing services to help them break the cycle of domestic violence.
"We are really excited about the opportunity this brings to women and children who are looking to build a new life free of violence," said Hiatus House Executive Director Sylvie Guenther. "Transitional housing will provide a period of support and safe housing to give women the time and space they need to establish themselves and ensure success once they are in permanent housing."
