Hockey team preparing for humanitarian trip

The Windsor Lancer's men's hockey team is preparing for a trip to British Columbia to help build homes in communities affected by wildfires and floods last year.

The team will help the First Nations Emergency Service Society build five homes in First Nations communities in Nicola Valley.

"There are still 600 people in Merritt that are outside their homes, and Merritt is a pretty small place," said Head Coach Kevin Hamlin. "To think that we're going to help just a little bit, I think will be important."

In addition to rebuilding homes, the team will offer a hockey academy with the Merritt Centennials Jr. A hockey team to help educate the community.

"It's such an opportunity to help our an Indigenous community that has faced disaster with the fires and floods in B.C., so all the guys are excited to touch lives and help the community over there," said team captain Mason Kohn.

Unifor Local 444 donated $50,000 to help send the players to B.C. It has also committed to sending skill-trade labour to help support the build.
