Strike notice rescinded as Pelee ferry talks continue

The union representing Pelee Island Ferry employees has said much progress was made in contract talks.

Unifor Local 444 went on social media Thursday evening to announce that it was withdrawing its strike notice against Owen Sound Transportation, which operates the ferries, due to what it called a strong progression of negotiations.

"As of 6:45 p.m. [Thursday] night, we have made significant strides in our bargaining with Owen Sound Transportation and our Pelee Island Ferry Service," read the tweet from the union. "The union has rescinded our strike notice to the employer. We will communicate with our members and make a formal announcement when possible."

A strike notice of 12:01 a.m. Friday was imposed if no agreement was in place. A strike would have disrupted travel plans ahead of the long Victoria Day weekend.

With the rescinding of the strike action, it is expected that the ferries will operate on Friday as usual. However, those planning to travel by ferry are asked to keep an eye on social media Thursday night and Friday morning for any updates.

Local 444 represents 75 people in three bargaining units. The employees overwhelming voted to take strike action if necessary.

Wage parity is a key issue, as union local president Dave Cassidy told Windsor News Today earlier this week.
