Visitors to Forest Glade Optimist Park in Windsor will have additional amenities opened for them in time for summer.
The City of Windsor unveiled the park's new sports-themed splash pad this week, along with a new fully-accessible washroom facility. The splash pad is located between the Forest Glade branch of the Windsor Public Library and the skate park.
The upgrades were shown off by Mayor Drew Dilkens and Ward 7 Councillor Jeewen Gill.
"Forest Glade Optimist Park is a gem in Ward 7," said Dilkens. "This space is home to many activities and programming suitable for all age groups from across the city. City Council remains committed to enhancing infrastructure at this park to ensure top-of-the-line amenities are available to support our growing city. These enhancements are among many park upgrades residents can expect as part of our $26-million investment in Windsor’s parks and recreation offerings in 2022."
Gill said the new splash pad is just what area residents will need with the unofficial start of summer, Victoria Day weekend, quickly approaching.
"Residents will now be able to enjoy a brand new splash pad and new washroom facilities," said Gill. "We are committed to a place where families can safely enjoy our recreational facilities and in the coming months will be installing security cameras for the safety of our community."
That section of the park is also getting a $50,000 security upgrade, with new security cameras. Elsewhere, the park's new pickleball and tennis courts are nearing completion and are expected to be ready by mid-June.
The splash pad upgrade is a $750,000 investment in Forest Glade Optimist Park, and part of a $2.2-million sports and recreation boost for the neighbourhood. The park has already added two new basketball courts and a multi-sports court with a special tile surface. A new LED lighting layout has also replaced a lighting system that was decades old.
