Tecumseh advocates for larger buffer zones for pot shops

The Town of Tecumseh will push the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario to keep pot shops at least 500 metres from schools, addiction treatment centres, municipal facilities and the library.

It can't dictate where pot shops are located within its borders, but it can make recommendations, and councillors said their greatest concern is safety.

The AGCO regulates pot shops and right now, the regulations say pot retail stores can set up shop so long as they are at least 150 metres from schools and other sensitive locations.

Councillors said it formulated its policy after consulting with the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, which recommended the larger buffer zone.

When the Cannabis Act legalized pot shops in October 2018, Tecumseh chose to opt out, choosing instead to see how other municipalities handled them. Last June, it changed its stance and began to allow them within municipal boundaries.
