Detroit launches app showcasing its urban art

The next time you're in Detroit, you might want to download a new smartphone app that can lead to the city's best murals.

The City of Detroit and software company, CANVS, are partnering to track and identify all the murals in the city so tourists can use their smartphones to find them and learn more about the artists.

The city plans to enlist a so-called army of "mural hunters" to want to honour local artists who created the murals.

Detroit residents will also be invited to submit new murals that are not included in the app.

Since 2015, the Detroit Mural Project has documented more than 1,000 murals in the city.

VisitDetroit.com said there are over 500,000 square feet of commissioned art spread throughout Detroit painted by artists from around the world.

There are even festivals dedicated to Detroit's street art including Murals in the Market and BLKOUT Walls Mural Festival featuring Black artists exclusively.

Last year, the first-ever Electrify Detroit Augmented Reality Mural Festival even married select murals with technology. Participants were encouraged to download the Electrify Augmented Reality Art App to view them in 3-D.
