City administration seeks to make it easier to request speed humps

If you're concerned about the speed of traffic on your street and think speed humps might slow it down, the City of Windsor could make the process to get those easier.

City councillors will be asked on Monday to streamline the approval process on eligible roads. Currently, it can take up to three years to have speed humps installed.

Those would be roads that aren't collector or arterial roads, transit or truck routes, primary roads for emergency services, or industrial routes.

Once a speed hump is requested, the city would survey households and commercial businesses on that street. If half of the residents respond and 60 per cent agree, the speed humps would go in.

If the majority does not agree, a new request will not be allowed for three years.

The change would be funded through the capital traffic calming budget, of which $421,396 is unallocated. Each speed hump costs about $7,435 to install.

In the short term, a report to council says speed humps could increase fuel use and emissions while drivers acclimatize to the change, but in the long run, it could cut greenhouse gases.
