Leamington resumes civil marriage ceremonies, some licenses extended

If you're getting married, the Municipality of Leamington has resumed civil marriage ceremonies and photo session rentals.

Those have been on hold since 2020 because of the pandemic.

An officiant performs the ceremonies at the Leamington Municipal Building, along with other locations in Essex, Windsor and Chatham-Kent.

Usually, marriage licenses are valid for only three months after they were issued, but there are exceptions because of the pandemic.

Those issued between December 1, 2019, and July 24, 2020, can be used up to July 24, 2022. Those issued between October 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020, can be used until February 10, 2023. Anyone with a license issued between January 1, 2021, and June 4, 2021, can use it until June 4, 2023. Finally, licenses issued between November 1, 2021, and February 24, 2022, are valid until February 24, 2024.

The validity period for marriage licenses issued between July 25, 2020, and September 30, 2020, has not been extended.

Licenses are only valid if neither applicant has changed their name or marital status since it was issued. After the ceremony, newlyweds can apply for a name change through Service Ontario.

Civil ceremony fees range from $276.85 and $367.25.

The Gallery at the Leamington Municipal Building is open for photo session rentals after office hours and on weekends and must be approved.
