A Windsor-based charity has partnered with a London-based private college and the Province of Ontario to train 200 new personal support workers.
In Honour of the Ones We Love and Westervelt College are offering the PSWs free training to care for, provide support for, and assist in the daily activities of the elderly and those in specialized care.
The 200 are part of the province's plan to hire more than 27,000 long-term care staff over the next four years, explained Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development Monte McNaughton.
About $200-million has been set aside through the Skills Development Fund to provide free training to job seekers and address the shortage of PSWs in Ontario.
It's on top of $4.9-billion committed to hiring thousands of nurses and other healthcare professionals.
"This partnership will provide much-needed skills across Ontario to support many individuals within our communities, as well as our healthcare system," said President and CEO of Westervelt College Don Thibert.

In Honour of the Ones We Love was founded in 1997 to support patients with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and disabilities in Windsor and Essex County.
Westervelt College has a 137-year history dating back to 1885 when it first opened its doors in London. It now has campuses in London, Windsor, Kitchener, and Brantford.
