Municipal election nomination period opens soon

If you are thinking of running in the upcoming municipal election, either for council or school board trustee, the nomination period opens next Monday.

Nominations close on August 19, and the municipal vote is on October 24.

Candidates need to collect 25 signatures endorsing their candidacy. Nominations need to be filed using the prescribed nomination paper and filed either in person or by an agent with the returning officer or clerk.

There is a fee. To run for mayor, candidates need to pay $200, and $100 for all other positions including school board trustee and councillor.

Candidates are not allowed to fundraise for their campaign or spend money on it until nomination papers are properly filed.

Anyone over the age of 18, who is a Canadian citizen and either lives in or owns property in the municipality where they are running is eligible.

The term of office starts November 15 and ends November 14, 2026.

Voters are also urged to make sure their name is on the voters' list by going online to www.voterlookup.ca.

In LaSalle, residents can cast their ballot online or by phone any time between October 14 at 8 p.m. to October 24.

Kingsville and Leamington are holding their elections by mail-in voting only this time. Residents should get a kit in the mail in late September or early October.

Tecumseh's vote will be online and by telephone only.
