One last tour of General Amherst High

A bittersweet event is coming up for anyone who ever wanted to see the inside of General Amherst High or revisit some of their high school days as alumni.

Not only is the high school in Amherstburg celebrating its centennial this year, but it will also close in June. So, the school is opening its doors to the public on Saturday, May 14, from noon to 7 p.m.

Greg Scott is the head of physical education and athletics at General Amherst and an organizer of next month's event.

"All the little nooks and crannies of the school will be opened up, so the people can go downstairs and check out the old firing range. They can go to their old classroom. They can check out where their old locker used to be," he said.

Some of the classrooms will showcase memorabilia from the decades. In the cafeteria, not only will cafeteria cookies be served, a special cafeteria cookie Sunday is on the menu.

For the kids, there will be face painting and outdoor activities.

"People of all ages can come and enjoy themselves and again get that one last little nostalgic feeling and say goodbye to the old building before it gets closed up," Scott said. "And, of course, finish off the whole visit with a big stack of cafeteria cookies."

And there will be music.

Each musical act includes at least one alumni from General Amherst, including Ryan Chappell, Heartt and the Gold, Electric Blue, Adam Butcher Music, and Two of A Kind.

The open house is open to anyone, alumni or not.

Scott said the open house has a Facebook page where the public can find updates on the event.

A new school will house students from General Amherst and Western High School when it opens in September. It will be called North Star High School.
