Couple's donation will promote bike safety after family tragedy

Years after their son suffered a life-altering injury while riding his bike, a couple in LaSalle are giving back to prevent a similar tragedy in the future.

Rick and Minela Orum donated $2,000 to the LaSalle Police Service Youth Foundation.

The money will help fund the annual LaSalle Police Bicycle Rodeo that teaches kids bicycle safety.

"They explained that they are very passionate about bicycle safety and ensuring our local youth have access to meaningful instruction in safe riding practices," said LaSalle Police Community Liaison Officer, Senior Constable Terry Seguin.

Seguin picked up the donation last week at their business, LaSalle Towing and Recovery on Malden Road.

The bicycle rodeo is back on June 4 after a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic.

Instructors from LaSalle Police Services and Bike Windsor Essex will be at the Vollmer Culture and Recreation Complex to provide safety instruction. Police will raffle off three bicycles, and participants will be treated to a skills show by a professional BMX stunt rider.
