Windsor officers cleared after man suffers broken shin

A pair of Windsor police officers have been cleared by the province's police watchdog after a man suffered serious injuries during an arrest last fall.

The incident happened at around 7:30 p.m. November 25, 2021 according to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). Windsor police responded to a report of a 'person in crisis' at a residence on Elsmere Avenue.

The person in question, a 32-year-old man, was deemed to be of unsound mind at the time and was apprehended by police under the Mental Health Act. Police say the man resisted and he had to be grounded.

Following the altercation, police observed that the man had suffered an injury and was taken to hospital where it was determined that his right shin had been fractured.

"While I accept that the [man] fractured his right tibia in the takedown that preceded his arrest, I am not satisfied that his injury is attributable to any unlawful conduct on the part of the [officers]," said SIU Director Joseph Martino.

As a result, the file has been closed.
