Essex improving accessibility at town facilities

The Town of Essex is increasing accessibility at its facilities with a smartphone application.

The NaviLens wayfinding system helps visually impaired people find their way around in unfamiliar environments. The system places codes throughout the building that can be scanned from 15 meters away. This activates an audio prompt that helps the person navigate the building.

“The NaviLens wayfinding system is a progressive feature that will provide an enhanced experience for visitors with visual impairments. We are proud to introduce this new and innovative technology in the Town of Essex to create an equal opportunity for all,” said Essex Mayor Richard Meloche.

Codes have been placed at the entrance of several town facilities, including the Essex Centre Sports Complex, Colchester Beach Harbour, and McGregor Community Centre.

Detailed navigation will be implemented in the future to create a fully accessible wayfinding experience for all facilities.
