The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has confirmed the first Influenza A case of 2022.
Health officials say there were no lab confirmed influenza cases last season. Previously, the first influenza case reported for a season was on December 11, 2019. The health unit is using the discovery to remind residents to get their flu shot.
The vaccine is free and is available at most local pharmacies in the region and doctors’ offices.
Symptoms of the flu and COVID-19 can be similar and include a fever, cough, difficulty breathing, fatigue, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose, headaches, and muscle/body aches. It may be difficult to differentiate the symptoms and testing may be required to confirm WECHU says.
"Symptoms start one to four days after being exposed and individuals with the flu can spread the virus before they experience symptoms," a release from the health unit read.
Anyone can contract the virus, but some are more prone to serious complications including babies under six months old, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with a chronic health condition.
To help prevent spreading the flu, WECHU recommends washing your hands frequently, coughing or sneezing into the crook of your elbow, cleaning common surface areas, and staying home if you are sick.
