Windsor-Essex woman dies from COVID-19

A woman in her 90s is the latest Windsor-Essex resident to pass away from COVID-19.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit confirmed the passing of the woman, who lived in the community, on Wednesday. This brings the regional COVID-19 death toll to 574 people.

Local hospitalizations tied to the virus have stayed relatively stable. As of 1 p.m. Wednesday, there was a total of 39 patients being treated in Windsor-Essex hospitals.

At Windsor Regional Hospital, 31 patients were dealing with COVID-19, with 19 of them having the virus as the chief complaint. The rest have tested positive while being treated for other issues.

Twenty-one of the patients at WRH have been fully vaccinated, with the rest either partially vaccinated or not at all. Five patients are in the ICU, with all but one fully vaccinated.

At Erie Shores Healthcare, there were eight people hospitalized with COVID-19, with four of them being treated for it primarily. The total was split down the middle between vaccinated and non-vaccinated patients.

There were no reported COVID-19 positive cases at Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare.

The health unit reported 44 new COVID-19 cases in high-risk settings, with the number of active cases still dropping, to 288.
