UPDATE: Ambassador Bridge reopens U.S. bound

A demonstration of truckers is ongoing on a Windsor street, but the Ambassador Bridge has reopened U.S. bound.

Windsor Police said it can be accessed through Wyandotte Street West.

According to Windsor police, officers have been in the area of Huron Church Road near the Ambassador Bridge since Monday morning, as a procession of truckers arrived to begin a protest against vaccine mandates.

The protest traffic backed up traffic on Huron Church Road on Monday. Shortly after 8 p.m., Essex County OPP announced that the bridge is no longer accessible. Just after 10:30 p.m. the bridge was declared closed.

Police are encouraging drivers travelling to the United States to use the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, or the Bluewater Bridge in Sarnia instead. People are also being asked to avoid the area.

On Monday night, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) confirmed that there were significant delays for traffic on the bridge coming into Canada. At one point, the exit onto Huron Church Road was closed in both directions.

The trucker protest Monday has been generally peaceful, and Windsor police have reported no significant problems. However, police have asked the truckers to protest respectfully and peacefully, and officers will make arrests if any unlawful actions are made.

The protest is similar to those that have taken place across Canada, particularly one in Ottawa that has all but paralyzed the area around Parliament Hill. They were originally protesting vaccine mandates put in place by the Canadian and U.S. governments for truckers, but it has since grown as a protest to public health mandates in general.
