Expansion coming to public school in LaSalle

A new public school in Windsor-Essex will be getting an expansion, courtesy of the provincial government.

The Ontario Ministry of Education has committed $4-million to the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) to expand the new Legacy Oak Trail Public School building in LaSalle. The funding is part of a $600-million province-wide investment for school upgrades.

The addition will provide space for 167 new elementary students.

"We are extremely pleased by the prompt response of the Ministry of Education to our request," said GECDSB Director of Education Erin Kelly. "This funding for an addition to Legacy Oak Trail Public School will accommodate the demand created by this wonderful new school and the growth occurring in its LaSalle neighbourhood."

Education Minister Stephen Lecce said student accessibility and safety improvements are priorities in new school spaces across Ontario.

"Essex County is a growing and thriving community, which is why our government is investing in modern and accessible learning spaces with improved ventilation for hard-working local families," said Lecce. "Our support for a permanent addition at the new Legacy Oak Trail Public School in LaSalle demonstrates our government’s commitment to Essex County families to provide their children with safe and quality learning."

The English-language public school board has already received $14-million in ventilation upgrades, along with 800 HEPA filter units.

The new Legacy Oak Trail Public School was completed in time for the start of the current school year.
