Health unit reports one death from COVID-19 Friday

A woman in her 70s is the latest Windsor-Essex resident to pass away from COVID-19.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported Friday that the woman was from the community. Her passing raises the regional death toll from the virus to 543.

There were 221 new cases of COVID-19 reported Friday in high-risk settings, but the health unit warns that the number could be an underestimate due to current testing guidelines.

The health unit reported that as of noon Friday, 103 patients were being treated in hospital. There were 70 at Windsor Regional Hospital, with 40 primarily admitted for COVID-19. There were ten patients in intensive care, with eight of them unvaccinated.

Erie Shores Healthcare said Friday that there were 22 people in its care, with 14 of them having the virus as the chief complaint. Fourteen of the patients at the Leamington hospital were either not vaccinated or partially vaccinated.

There are 81 outbreaks currently being monitored, with 29 in the community. There were 28 in long-term care facilities, 14 in workplaces, and ten in hospitals.

The active case count continues to drop, with Friday's total at 1,662, down from Thursday's 1,827.

The health unit reported Friday that 85.4 per cent of all residents five and older had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 80.8 per cent had received both doses. Just over half, 50.2 per cent of those 18 and up have received a booster.
