Investigators have uncovered more items related to a counterfeit investigation, resulting in more charges for a 27-year-old man.
Windsor police's Financial Crimes Unit began looking in December 2021 at a report of counterfeit currency and fraud. The LaSalle police and the Essex County Ontario Provincial Police got involved after additional reports of counterfeiting incidents throughout Windsor-Essex, all allegedly involving the same person.
The suspect was arrested Thursday afternoon at a motel on Division Road near Devonwood Conservation Area. Police say he had a BMW with misused Alberta licence plates.
On Friday, a warrant was obtained to search the BMW, along with a Lexus that police had earlier confiscated. Among the items seized were counterfeit Canadian and U.S. currency, counterfeit licence plates, phony identification cards, and credit cards that did not belong to the suspect.
The Windsor man now faces a total of 26 charges, including possessing and uttering counterfeit money, and fraud. Three of the total charges were brought by LaSalle police. None of the charges have been proven in court.
Police are asking anyone who may have had similar fraud or counterfeit incidents to give them a call.
