The region’s death toll from COVID-19 climbed to 510 over the weekend.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported two new COVID-19-related deaths since Friday.  A man in his 60s and a woman in her 70s passed away after testing positive for the virus.

Local hospitals are treating 117 patients who have tested positive.

At Windsor Regional Hospital, 106 patients have tested positive for COVID-19, and 69 of them have been admitted primarily due to the virus. Fourteen patients are in the intensive care unit. Ten of them are unvaccinated, while one is partially vaccinated and, three are fully vaccinated. Among the fully vaccinated patients in the ICU, only one has been admitted primarily for the treatment of COVID-19.

Erie Shores Healthcare has eleven patients in its care who have tested positive, eight of them primarily due to complications from the virus.

Over the weekend, the health unit identified 1,108 new cases in the community. Due to current testing eligibility, this does not represent the full burden of the disease in the community. There are 4,084 known active cases in Windsor-Essex.

Public health officials are monitoring outbreaks at 26 long-term care or retirement homes, 35 community congregate settings, ten workplaces, and six hospital units. Due to limits for testing, the health unit admitted it might not know of all the workplace outbreaks.
