COVID-19 continues to strain local hospitals

Calling it a significant burden on the local healthcare system, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit said there are now 95 people in area hospitals with COVID-19.

Eighty-two of them are at Windsor Regional Hospital, and there are another six at Erie Shores Healthcare.

Because of the difference in reporting times, there may be a discrepancy between the numbers, but the health unit said its figures were from Thursday morning.

On Thursday, it confirmed another 409 cases in high-risk settings. The health unit acknowledges that's likely an underestimate of the true number of infections within the community.

Of those, 378 remain under investigation. Another 16 were acquired in the community, while 13 are from close contact with another case, and two are related to outbreaks, of which there are now 66.

There are also 3,711 active cases in the region.

So far, 152,629 residents have had their booster shot, and 79.1 per cent of those over five are fully vaccinated.

The province reported 35 new deaths and 9,909 infections. There are 3,630 people in the hospital, an increase of 182 from Wednesday, and 500 patients in intensive care units.
