COVID hospitalizations continue to rise

The number of people seeking treatment in local hospitals due to COVID-19 continues to rise.

Windsor Regional Hospital has 81 patients in its care who have tested positive for the virus. Among those patients, 48 have been admitted primarily due to complications of COVID-19. There are 10 patients in the intensive care unit, of whom five are unvaccinated, two are partially vaccinated and three are fully vaccinated.

Erie Shores Healthcare has 11 patients admitted who have tested positive for COVID-19. Of those 10 are in hospital primarily for the treatment of the virus and one is in hospital for another reason.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported one new COVID-19 related death in the region. A man in his 80s who lived in a long-term care or retirement home passed away after testing positive.

The health unit also reported 439 new cases in the last 24 hours. This does not represent the true burden of disease in the community as testing is currently limited to symptomatic vulnerable individuals.

There are 22 long-term care or retirement homes and 26 community congregate settings experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks. Windsor Regional Hospital also reported outbreaks on three of its units on Tuesday.

Due to testing restrictions, outbreaks at workplaces are no longer being tracked.
