Local hospitals seeing an increase of COVID-19 patients

Local hospitals are treating 49 patients who have tested positive for COVID-19.

There are 44 COVID-positive patients at Windsor Regional Hospital and 34 of them are there to be treated for the virus. Of those, six are being treated in the intensive care unit. While 25 of the 44 patients are fully vaccinated, all six patients in the ICU are either unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated.

Erie Shores Health Care is treating three vaccinated and two unvaccinated patients for COVID-19. There are two more patients in the hospital waiting for test results.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit confirmed an additional 558 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. That brings the number of known active cases to 2,526.

Currently, testing is restricted to vulnerable individuals like long-term care residents and those who work in frontline healthcare. Because of that, the full burden of disease in the community is unknown.

The health unit is currently monitoring outbreaks at eight long-term care facilities and one hospital unit. Outbreaks at community facilities and workplaces are no longer being tracked as most individuals are no longer eligible for testing.
