Seven more people in Windsor-Essex have died from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours.
Three men and a woman in their 50s, a man in his 70s, a woman in her 80s and a woman in her 90s passed away after testing positive for the virus. All were individuals who lived in the community, except the woman in her 90s who lived in a long-term care or retirement home.
There have been 495 COVID-19 related deaths in the region since the start of the pandemic.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit also identified 247 new cases in the community bringing the active number of cases up to 1,224.
Local hospitals are treating 18 patients who have tested positive for COVID-19. Windsor Regional Hospital is reporting 15 patients in hospital, eight are fully vaccinated and seven are unvaccinated.
The health unit is actively monitoring 23 outbreaks in the community. However, Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Shanker Nesathurai indicated with the number of cases coming in daily, case and contact management is suffering and staff may not be able to identify all outbreaks.
Meanwhile, Ontario continues to blow past record daily case counts. On Thursday, 13,807 new cases were reported province-wide, and there are 86,754 active infections.
