SIU clears Windsor police in man's injuries

Ontario's police oversight agency has cleared three Windsor police officers of any criminal wrongdoing after a man suffered a broken rib during his arrest.

The Special Investigations Unit was called to Windsor after the incident in August.

According to the SIU, officers were called to a home on Lillian Avenue for a domestic dispute on August 29, 2021.

When they arrived, the attemped to take the man into custody.

"The man resisted arrest, kicking at officers, and one officer punched the man twice in the face," the SIU said. "He was then handcuffed."

Following his arrest, the man complained of pain and was transported to hospital. He was diagnosed with a minimally displaced 12th rib fracture.

SIU Director Joseph Martino found no reasonable grounds to believe that any of the officers acted in any way that was unlawful thoughout their interactions with the man. With that, he says, the file is closed.
