LaSalle 2022 budget approved in principle

Residents of the Town of LaSalle will see a slight bump in their 2022 property tax bills.

LaSalle Town Council approved in principle Thursday afternoon, the municipality's 2022 spending plan. It calls for a 1.75 per cent municipal tax rate increase, which will increase the 2022 levy by $1.7-million over 2021.

"This is a responsible budget," said Mayor Marc Bondy. "We are not putting things off until tomorrow, but are moving cautiously to support some important projects. We will also continue to provide the services to our community that they have come to expect."

With the tax rate figured in, a property owner with a parcel assessed at $256,000 will pay an additional $44.12 per year. The Ontario government postponed the next municipal property assessment until 2023, which means that property owners will have the same assessment value as in 2020 and 2021.

"Our goal the past two years has been to continue to work towards our strategic goals while keeping tax increases as low as possible," said LaSalle Treasurer and Finance Director Dale Langlois. "Staff in all of our municipal departments have worked hard to ensure that their budgets are well-managed."

The levy increases are accounted for with an additional $514,000 in policing costs, $850,000 for changes in service levels, and $948,000 to reflect changes brought on by inflation.

Councillors also approved in principle a report on the town's capital spending plan for 2022 to 2027.

The complete budget is found on the town's official website. Councillors will officially implement it with a by-law at a regular session after the holidays.
