Hope Hill is official

A local tobogganing hill in Riverside’s Little River Corridor Park was granted a new name and now has the signage to prove it.

In May, the Canadian Mental Health Association – Windsor Essex County Branch (CMHA-WECB) initiated a campaign inviting the community to offer alternate names for the hill, which was once unofficially called 'Suicide Hill'.

"We believe that language is important and we need to choose our words carefully to convey compassion, empathy and understanding. Formally adopting the name of Hope Hill is a conversation starter that helps to reduce the stigma of mental illness." Windsor's Commissioner of Human & Health Services, Jelena Payne said.

City Council's decision to approve the name change, in September, coincided with Suicide Awareness Month. They wanted to use Hope Hill's new name as an educational opportunity for suicide awareness.

"Names are important." Ward 7 Councillor Jeewen Gill said when the new sign was revealed on Friday. "That is why Council supported the investment in signage to help connect this place to our community in a strong and positive way."

Hope Hill's new signage cost $1,500. The name will also be advertised by the City via the City website and social media pages.
