UPDATE: Windsor-Essex reports fewer than 80 cases for the first time in five days

The daily case count dipped a little on Friday, as the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported another 63 COVID-19 infections.

For every other day this week, it has been over 80. However, the new ones bring the total caseload since March 2020 to 22,062.

The case numbers went in the opposite direction province-wide.  Ontario reported 1,031 new cases,  The last time the number was that high was in May.  There were four new deaths, and 7,217 active cases.

Of the new infections locally, public health officials are still working to find out how 20 people caught the virus. Another 25 resulted from close contact with another confirmed case, 15 are community-acquired, and three stem from an outbreak in the region.

As of Friday, there were 577 active cases in the region, including 25 patients in area hospitals.

Outbreaks at seven elementary schools and two childcare centres are among the 32 in the region.

The number of cases at Care For You Newcomer Children Daycare has not yet been determined, but there are three at Montessori Early Years.

St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School in River Canard remains closed with 11 infections. The other six other schools, Queen Elizabeth Public School, W.F. Herman Academy - Elementary, Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School, Malden Central Public School, St. John Vianney Catholic Elementary School, Stella Maris Catholic Elementary School, remain open.

Nine people have contracted the virus in an outbreak at Chartwell Royal Oak Long-Term Care Residents, while cases are still being counted at Country Village Health Care.

Sixteen workplaces have outbreaks, and there are six in the community.

By Friday morning, 77.1 per cent of all residents over the age of five were fully vaccinated.
