Spirit of Christmas this weekend in Windsor-Essex

If you're not quite in the holiday spirit, some events planned over the weekend might help.

LaSalle's Holiday Lights Heritage Nights kicks off Friday night at the LaSalle Civic Centre on Malden Road. The entertainment starts at 6 p.m. The tree lighting ceremony gets underway about half an hour later.

The lights will be on nightly from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. until January 9. Town officials welcome the public to Food Truck Fridays, Sounds of the Season Saturdays, and Night Market Sundays.

On Saturday, Santa comes to town in Amherstburg.

The Windsor Parade Corporation presents its first Santa Claus Parade of the season in downtown Amherstburg. It gets underway at 6 p.m. at the corner of Sandwich Street and William Street. Families are encouraged to come early to get a good spot along the route, which runs along Sandwich to Richmond Street, west to Dalhousie Street and ends at Toddy Jones Park.

The corporation presents a new float this year. "The Island of Misfit Toys" features Yukon Cornelius, the Train with Square Wheels, and Charlie in the Box. It's dedicated posthumously to Clayton Massender, a longtime volunteer.

Santa will also visit Point Pelee National Park on Saturday. The Municipality of Leamington presents its second drive-thru parade starting at 5 p.m. Spectators can view floats, mascots, clowns, elves, and Santa himself until 8 p.m.

The Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association and CUPE Local 543 invite families to visit Santa on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Downtown Holiday Village.

Santa is being extra careful during the pandemic, so he'll be safely tucked away inside a large snow globe on Maiden Lane West.

"In spite of a tumultuous year that's no doubt challenging, especially for kids, it was important for us to be able to bring Santa back," said Chair Brian Yeomans. "Traditions are so important for families, and we're happy to be able to support those traditions in innovative, fun ways."

Santa will be back on Saturday, December 4, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Later that evening, the Windsor Parade Corporation showcases the 53rd Annual Windsor Santa Clause Parade starting at 6 p.m. This year's presentation will feature music, horse units, entertainers, and local nonprofits. The route begins on Wyandotte Street East at Argyle Road in Walkerville and will make its way west to Glengarry Avenue.

On December 11, Essex holds its Santa Claus Parade starting at 6:30 p.m. That parade starts on Talbot Street at Fairview Avenue and ends at Maidstone Avenue.
