WECOSS issues overdose alert

The region's surveillance system that monitors opioid-related emergency department visits has registered a sharp increase over the last week.

Between November 10 and November 16, there were 14 opioid overdoses reported in the region. There were 13 overdoses reported at Windsor Regional Hospital and one at Erie Shores Healthcare. Of the overdoses reported, 13 involved fentanyl.

This exceeds the two year and five year historical values.

Because of the increase, the Windsor-Essex Community Opioid and Substance Strategy has issued an alert to its partners.

The alert was issued in an effort to find linkages between the cases or other causes for the increase. If you are aware of any causes contact the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.
