Several students linked to Delta Chi investigation issued sanctions

Several University of Windsor students have been issued "significant" disciplinary sanctions after the university completed its investigation into the Delta Chi Fraternity.

The investigation was launched nearly one year ago, after a group of messages containing racist, sexist, and homophobic content were revealed to administration.

Siting privacy reasons, the University of Windsor would not reveal how many students were involved in the incident or how many were issued sanctions.

"In addition to the sanctions, which I will describe as significant, that have been imposed there is also a requirement for these students to undergo education and training," said Interim Vice President of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Clinton Beckford.

Bedford said the training will be rigorous and require the students to devote several hours to its completion.

"We want to ensure that students are not only penalized but we do something that will actually lead to their reform," said Beckford. "We would certainly like to ensure that they will not engage in these kinds of behaviours in the future."

The university prohibited any further meetings or activities of the Delta Chi International Fraternity on campus last year. All other Greek Letter organizations' activities have also been ceased and are pending a review by the university.

"We are hopeful that the conclusion of this matter will also provide an opportunity for our campus to learn, to heal, and to move forward positively. The University takes matters of harassment and discrimination very seriously and we encourage all staff, faculty, and students to come forward to report any such incidents," said President and Vice Chancellor Rob Gordon in a written statement.

The university has stated it is also undertaking a third-party review of student disciplinary processes. This review aims to ensure the processes are effective, fair, and efficient.
