The City of Windsor has reached an agreement with the Detroit River Tunnel Company to manage Gateway Park.
Gateway Park starts at Riverside Drive West and Cameron Avenue and runs to Wyandotte Street East creating a border between Ward 2 and Ward 3.
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens announced the city has signed a licensing agreement with the company to operate the park.
"This agreement took effect November 9th and grants the city full rights over the next 99 years to operate and manage the nine acres of naturalized greenspace known as Gateway Park," said Dilkens.
The Detroit River Tunnel Company retains full ownership of the land and will pay the City $300,000 to assist with maintenance costs. This payment includes a one-time transfer of $100,000, followed by an annual disbursement of $20,000 for the next 10 years.
The City of Windsor has committed $700,000 to improve the park. Improvements will include a 1 kilometre fully accessible trail, lighting, landscaping, and new park facilities like benches and garbage & recycling bins.
"The potential of the park, after this investment is really huge and it's going to increase the quality of life for residents. Not just on Cameron and Wellington but throughout our inner city neighbourhoods," said Ward 2 Councillor Fabio Costante.
The park’s full revitalization is expected to be completed by fall of 2022.
