Public invited back to Remembrance Day ceremonies

Local veterans are hopeful they will see large crowds at the region's cenotaphs this year after many were asked to stay home in 2020.

Earlier this week, Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens spoke to veterans and active military personnel to ask them what Remembrance Day means to them.

Afghan war veteran Master Corporal Mike Akpata said seeing the community attend these services helps him get through the difficult day.

"It is the members of the public and the children with their paper-made poppies that fill my heart with a future glow for where this country is going to go," said Akpata.

Ceremonies are taking place at the downtown Windsor cenotaph as well as the University of Windsor. In the county, ceremonies are taking place in LaSalle, Kingsville, Amherstburg, Essex, Harrow, Belle River, Comber, Leamington, Wheatley, and Tilbury.

Organizers of all events are reminding people to follow COVID-19 guidelines. Residents are asked to maintain physical distance or wear a mask if that is not possible.

If you are not comfortable attending the ceremonies in person, the City of Windsor ceremony will be broadcast live on the city's Facebook page and YourTV. YourTV will rebroadcast the ceremony at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
